At 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on June 23, INFINITI officially revealed the all-new 2022 INFINITI QX60. That moment was the culmination of years of engineering to create the luxury three-row SUV and months of meticulous planning by teams worldwide to unveil the daring new SUV.
Far from ordinary, the 2022 INFINITI QX60 and its debut represent the future for INFINITI and moves the brand into a vibrant, new era that offers serene comfort and dynamic style — in everything they produce. The global debut of the 2022 QX60 was nearly simultaneously executed by teams around the world and featured a beautiful debut film, lavish in-person events, and personal but virtual showcases. Vehicles were quietly shipped around the world for the event in utmost secrecy and intensely monitored.
In the hours preceding the official global debut, exclusive viewings at secure locations were offered to media and select retailers. We take you behind the scenes in the hours leading up to and after the debut around the world.
Los Angeles
4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time — June 22 (18 hours before debut)
The sun slowly arcs across the Palos Verdes bluffs and flints off the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes that soak in the California afternoon sun and ocean breeze. Just footsteps away, the all-new 2022 INFINITI QX60 sits underneath a soft silken sheet, etched with a pattern that mimics kimono folds inspired from across the Pacific. In just a few hours, INFINITI's newest vehicle will be introduced to the world, but this selected group of media and retailers get a peek tonight — some have even flown across the U.S. just to see the second-generation QX60 in the metal.
It's a remarkable journey that's brought the QX60 here. Designed half a world away in Atsugi, Japan, and assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee, this nearly hand-built prototype has traveled halfway across the country under "Code Red" secrecy with a padlocked cover to prevent prying eyes from stealing a glance.
A sheet obstructs this QX60's Moonbow Blue exterior for now, but in just three hours, the silk will be pulled, treating those here to the world's first glimpse of INFINITI's new star performer.
Just a few weeks earlier and only a few miles north, this same QX60 stealthily crept onto a Hollywood backlot. It starred alongside mother, author, entrepreneur, and Academy Award-nominated actor Kate Hudson in a captivating reveal film that will debut around the world just a few hours from now.
Although the reveal film is a very public event, tonight's party is very private. Only a handful of people, journalists, and others can see the 2022 QX60 ahead of time. As it turns out, it's not enough.
Visitors file in early, climb aboard the soft semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, and stay late. As the sun dips over nearby Catalina Island and the crowd slowly disperses, it's the QX60's lighting that leaves a striking final impression with bright digital piano keys on the outside and soft ambient illumination that offers a warm glow inside the cabin.
New York City
8 p.m. Eastern Standard time — June 22 (17 hours before official reveal)
New York City's din simmers in the summer night. Passersby, cars, and buses scuttle east on W. 24th Street past Studio 525 in Chelsea. The attraction for tonight would be the nearby Highline Park that's just a two-minute walk from here, an oasis of calm in a city that takes very few breaks and sleeps even less. Light rain tonight has dampened any exodus to the park for a walk at dusk, though.
Inside Studio 525, the 2022 QX60 uncovered at 7:08 p.m. is ready for its closeup.
As media guests, and later, a group of INFINITI retailers shuffle through the chic space, munch on arancini, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese, the QX60 comes into view. The QX60's Warm Titanium paint soaks in the light and radiates a deep hue back into the gallery. An LED pattern illuminated on the wall mimics the kimono fold patterns inlaid within the headlamps, one of many subtle yet expressive Japanese details that adorns the QX60.
Even here, in the city world-renown for theater and shows, the 2022 QX60 gets a curtain call for an encore late in the evening to the guests who can't get enough glances of INFINITI's all-new SUV.
Los Angeles
10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time — June 23
Tens of thousands of viewers worldwide tune in to the YouTube premiere of "INFINITI Presents: Conquer Life in Style with All-New QX60," starring the 2022 INFINITI QX60 and Kate Hudson.
Comments flood the screen: "It's a beautiful, beautiful car that shows elegance," wrote one user. "Glorious reveal video," wrote another. "I'm Japanese, but I'm really looking forward to QX60!"
It doesn't take long for the video and social media reach to skyrocket. The film tops more than 176,000 views not long after, reaching more than 36 million people, with more than 97% reporting a favorable impression of the new SUV. Thousands of potential owners sign up to be the first to hear about the all-new QX60 coming soon.
Nashville, Tennessee
12:08 p.m. Central Standard Time — June 23 (8 minutes after the global debut)
INFINITI Americas Group Vice President Jeff Pope stands in the headquarters of his automaker near Nashville, surrounded by 250 employees and in front of another QX60 like the one he presented last night in New York.
Instead of arancini and sparkling wine, gatherers here find room for perfect pastries from Brightside Bakeshop, perfectly flaky layers dusted with sugar. For spice? Fluffy Marigold popcorn tossed in Nashville's signature flavor — Nashville Hot. It's a Hollywood premiere, after all.
Just seconds before the credits rolled on the QX60 film as it debuted across the world. Now, the sheet is pulled back on the QX60 for employees to cheers and applause.
"Wow," one employee says.
"That's beautiful up close," says another.
Although many within the halls of INFINITI have followed the development vehicles and ogled the QX60 Monograph before this moment, for many more, this is the first in-person showing of the car due to COVID restrictions.
INFINITI HQ in the U.S. only opened its doors to employees that week and many employees have spent the last year working from home.
The QX60 won't wait that long to come back. Pope tells the crowd that the first QX60s will arrive in showrooms across the U.S. in just a few months; the assembly lines in Smyrna, Tennessee, just a half-hour down Interstate 24, is primed to begin rolling out QX60s in August.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
1:08 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time — June 23
Clouds roll into San Juan, Puerto Rico, cooling off the sweltering, sticky 80-degree day. Latin American and Caribbean markets aren't as open yet as their American counterparts, but INFINITI Latin American employees and journalists get their first glimpses at the QX60 coming to them later. More than 700 employees watched the event live and asked when the three-row SUV would come.
"It's totally different," one said.
Others reported interested shoppers in the showrooms hours later asking how they could get their hands on it.
"I loved it: incredible design, the lights, the panoramic sunroof. I love everything about the QX60," the media said later.
Dubai
9 p.m. Gulf Standard Time — June 23
Al Serkel Avenue in Dubai is a chic, contemporary area in a vibrant city that's always timely and fashionable.
Today's heat reached beyond 100 degrees, but Concrete, the stylish industrial space in the Al Quoz district where INFINITI hosted its event, oozes cool. It also exudes more.
INFINITI in the Middle East mastered the use of scents and sounds for the event to create a spa-like calm that wasn't only auditory and olfactory — it enveloped nearly every other sense, too. Delicate cherry blossoms were splayed on LED screens as guests entered; fruity mocktails were passed around alongside canapes presented with more flair than the five-star restaurants that dot Dubai.
At 8:50 p.m., The dozens of media guests and regional partners are greeted by the Managing Director of INFINITI International Markets, Nasif Siddiqi, who touted a new era for the automaker, thanks partly to the QX60's arrival.
As the QX60 flickered on-screen behind the covered SUV at Concrete, phones raised a little higher, flashes popped, and anticipation grew to pull back the sheet from the Moonbow blue QX60. When it finally did, applause filled the industrial exhibition area and didn't stop until cameras and guests surrounded the QX60.
Yokohama, Japan
9 a.m. Japan Standard Time — June 24
The number started at around 200. It snowballed from there.
INFINITI's Global Headquarters in Yokohama is complete with a stylish gallery with INFINITI models, past and present, displayed on rotation.
The QX60 figured heavily into those current plans but figures more into its future. When more than 200 employees signed up to see it via an interactive presentation, that future was bright. When more than 300 signed up to see it, the future was practically blinding.
INFINITI Global Head of Product Strategy Eric Rigaux and INFINITI Senior Design Director Taisuke Nakamura fielded questions about the QX60 at the Global Headquarters. INFINITI employees and their Nissan counterparts from Japan pored over the details: semi-aniline leather-appointed seats with contrast stitching and piping, origami-inspired grille, 12.3-inch touchscreen, and more.
The QX60 won't go on sale in Japan. However, INFINITI's homeland has inspired its design in many ways. It's the latest offering from the brand that embodies Modern Japanese Luxury.
INFINITI Chairman Peyman Kargar implores the crowd in Japan to embrace #BusyButHappy, initially a reference from the reveal film that has become a mantra for the small but hardworking team who have worked on the debut. It will carry them toward the start of sales in just a few months. After the presentation and the lights and cameras are packed away, media from Japan trickle in, eager to see the QX60 and understand more about INFINITI's plans in China and the Americas.
Beijing
8 a.m. China Standard Time — June 24, 2021
Morning in Beijing sends sunlight through more than 80 skyscrapers that dot the Beijing cityscape. Nearly half of those skyscrapers are less than a decade old, a testament to the boom here.
The city and its inhabitants are growing — and growing into their tastes. China is already the largest market for luxury automobiles, and it's clear that a new dawn is breaking.
The INFINITI QX60 SUV is coming here next year, regionalized for its customers in China to reflect their growing tastes. It's the latest SUV from INFINITI to arrive here after the stunning QX55, an ever-increasing portfolio of vehicles aimed at thriving customers.
"The person who is going to buy the all-new INFINITI QX60 is driven by success," Rigaux says. "Success in his career, success in his life."
The morning in China also brings a routine for many of its inhabitants before work: Tai Chi. It's morning respite and routine, the kind of skillful movements and artistry in motion reflected in the QX60.
"Of course, we wanted to have the INFINITI sense of artistry," said Senior Vice President for Global Design Alfonso Albaisa. "The QX60 has a sense of muscularity, too. A flowing motion with purpose."
China knows all of it. Very well.
The sun is rising in China. The same goes for INFINITI during its busy but happy day, beginning with the all-new 2022 INFINITI QX60.
